#GiveEssex5 – A Day of Celebration

Last Tuesday 28 November saw Essex mark #GivingTuesday, the worldwide celebration of philanthropy. This was our third year participating and our best yet, with record numbers of engagement from staff, students, alumni and friends of the University, and over £2,000 raised to support students using Click, our in-house crowdfunding platform.

This year we came up with a specific theme, hashtag and name of the campaign. We called it #GiveEssex5 with an official hand gesture. We asked our supporters to ‘Give Essex 5’ by donating £5 to help matchfund student projects on Click. All student projects are matchfunded for the first £250 raised, thereby turning £250 into £500 – a great boost to their fundraising efforts!

We also asked for people to send in their selfies, with the University donating £1 to Click for every selfie posted to Twitter with the #GiveEssex5 hashtag. To help promote the day, our old friends from StiltsPro paid a visit to campus. StiltsPro have used Click twice to support their work performing live theatre in the refugee camps of Europe. Their giant parrot certainly put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces!

Vicky Madzharska, Coordinator for the #GiveEssex5 campaign said, ‘We’re so pleased that the #GiveEssex5 really captured the imagine of the Essex community. Thank you so so much to everyone that donated or shared a selfie, you have all played a part in continuing to make students dreams a reality on Click’.

With the success of #GiveEssex5, Click will be matching a further 8 projects across a range of sports, societies, arts, theatre, volunteering and student start-ups. Whilst #GivingTuesday may be over for another year, Click continues on every day, with new projects being put up all the time. Please head over to click.hubbub.net to see what our amazing students are working on at the moment, and if you are able to support one or two it could really make the difference to their project.
